BEIJING - CHINA has blocked access to the New York Times website, the newspaper said on Saturday, days after the central government defended its right to censor online content it deems illegal.

Computer users who logged on in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou received a message that the site was not available when they tried to connect on Friday morning, the paper said. Some users were cut of as early as Thursday evening, it said.

 
Taiwan: Bird flu in chickens

TAIPEI - A SENIOR Taiwanese official says a mild form of bird flu has been found in chickens that died at a poultry farm in southern Taiwan.

Strong quake off Japan

TOKYO - A STRONG 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday off the east coast of Japan, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake hit 139 kilometres (87 miles) east-southeast of Iwaki, Honshu, at 7.29pm (6.29pm Singapore time) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, the USGS said.

Goa beach parties banned

PANAJI (India) - BEACH parties in the Indian resort state of Goa are to be banned over the Christmas and New Year because of security fears following the Mumbai attacks, the authorities here said on Saturday.

'Taking into consideration all the aspects, we have decided that beach parties would not be allowed from December 23 to January 5,' Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat told reporters outside his official residence.
