MUMBAI - THE gunman captured in last month's Mumbai attacks told police he had originally intended to seize hostages and call the media to make demands, according to his confession statement obtained on Saturday by The Associated Press.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab said he and his partner, who assaulted the city's main train station, had planned a rooftop standoff, but they couldn't find access to a roof, the statement says.

 
China arrests dozens after riot

BEIJING - POLICE in northern China have detained dozens of people who rioted because they were angry about the compensation paid for the death of a local man, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.

A local agricultural company in Wangjia village in northern Shanxi province paid 10,000 yuan (S$2,179) for the funeral costs for Ren Shoufu, a 61-year-old security guard, after he died of an apparent heart attack in the company's gate-house, Xinhua said.

India navy arrests 23 pirates

NEW DELHI - THE Indian navy says it has arrested 23 pirates who threatened a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden.

Navy spokesman Commander Nirad Sinha says Indian forces repulsed the pirates on Saturday as they were about to board the merchant ship.

Mumbai's Taj to reopen

MUMBAI - MUMBAI'S Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, stormed last month by Islamist militants, will reopen before Christmas, its owners said on Saturday.

The modern Tower wing of the iconic, red-domed waterfront complex would be back in business on the evening of December 21, Indian Hotels Co Ltd, part of the Tata Group conglomerate, said.
