TOKYO - A MODERATE 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Japan's largest island on Saturday but there was no risk of a tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, and no immediate reports of damage.

 
Where it all began

ON A dark wintry night 30 years ago this month, 18 famished farmers in this remote village huddled together and sealed an act of defiance that would transform the Chinese countryside forever.

Pressing their red-inked thumbs onto a crumpled piece of paper, these farmers in central China's Anhui province agreed to do away with the collective farming that had suppressed grain production and left them hungry for years.

India-Russia nuke deal inked

NEW DELHI - INDIA and Russia signed a civilian nuclear deal Friday that would see Russia build four nuclear reactors for power-starved India.

The deal was inked during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and visiting President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia.
