TAIPEI - PRO-INDEPENDENCE groups rallied in Taiwan's capital on Saturday in support of former president Chen Shui-bian, who has been detained over corruption allegations.

Protesters, wearing yellow headbands reading 'political persecution,' demanded justice for Chen, who has gone on hunger strike to protest what he says are politically motivated allegations against him.

 
Espionage report misleading

BEIJING - CHINA has denounced a US congressional panel that issued a report accusing it of stepping up computer espionage attacks on the American government, its defense contractors and businesses.

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, a congressional advisory panel, also said in an annual report to lawmakers that aggressive Chinese space programs were allowing Beijing to better target US military forces.

Luxury fair evades gloom

Panda attacks Chinese man

BEIJING - A PANDA at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who snuck into its pen hoping for a cuddle with the endangered bear, state media said on Saturday.

The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said.
