TOKYO - THE beatification of 188 Japanese martyrs killed in the 17th century will send an important message to Christians in Japan today, a representative of Pope Benedict XVI said on Friday.

'They were martyred 400 ago but they still send us a very important message,' said Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, who will represent Pope Benedict XVI at the ceremony on Monday in the western port city of Nagasaki.

 
N.Korean fishermen returned

SEOUL - SOUTH Korea has sent six North Koreans back to their communist homeland after their fishing boat accidentally drifted south due to an engine problem.

The Unification Ministry says the North Koreans were handed over at the two countries' land border on Friday evening.

China journalist jailed 3 years

BEIJING - A CHINESE writer and journalist who was arrested after protesting against a power plant in south-west China was sentenced on Friday to three years in prison on charges of subverting state power, his lawyer said.

Chen Daojun was sentenced in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, in a trial lasting a little more than 30 minutes, said Beijing-based lawyer Zhu Jiufu.
