KHAR (Pakistan) - PAKISTANI jets and artillery killed 17 people, including some Uzbek commanders, as they pounded suspected Taleban and Al-Qaeda hideouts in a tribal area, officials said on Thursday.

The rebels were killed in overnight jet attacks and Thursday morning artillery and mortar bombardments at four places in Bajaur district, part of the troubled region bordering Afghanistan, government and security officials said.

 
Chen's appeal invalid

TAIPEI - TAIWAN'S former president Chen Shui-bian remained behind bars on Thursday in a corruption probe after a court found an appeal against his detention invalid.

The High Court said in a statement that it has granted three days for Chen's lawyer to validate the appeal by ensuring that the ex-president's signature or finger prints are on it.

China arrests 30 over riots

BEIJING - POLICE have arrested 30 people involved in a two-day violent protest in a city in northwest China that had to be broken up with tear gas after 74 people were injured.

Cheers to wine bath

HAKONE (Japan) - JAPAN'S love of Beaujolais Nouveau hasn't gone cold, at least in this mountainous hot spring resort where people began bathing in the light red wine on Thursday.

Roughly two dozen visitors at the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun spa resort braved the cold temperature to dip in a wine bath for the midnight uncorking of this season's Beaujolais.
