Moderate quake hits Panama

PANAMA CITY - A MODERATELY strong earthquake has rattled Panama, sending residents rushing into the streets.

The US Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and was centered in an area about 95 kilometres northeast of Panama City.

Authorities say they have no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

Civil defense system director Arturo Alvarado told a local radio station that 'it felt very strong.' The quake struck in the pre-dawn hours on Saturday. -- AP
