H1N1 FLU OUTBREAK
Flu hits Vanuatu

SYDNEY - THE small Pacific nation of Vanuatu has recorded its first cases of swine flu, a report said on Thursday.

Two children aged five living in different communities were confirmed with the disease by tests carried out in Melbourne, the Pacnews service said quoting a government statement.

'These two children were brought with mild flu-like symptoms three weeks ago to Vila Central Hospital and throat swab samples were collected,' the statement said.

'They have now totally recovered. No serious cases of sick people have been found in their families or in nearby communities.'

The report could not immediately be confirmed with Vanuatu authorities.

The pandemic has hit nearly 56,000 people worldwide, causing 238 deaths since late March, according to the World Health Organisation. -- AFP
