Jailed for aiding Hizbollah

NEW YORK - A MAN who admitted helping the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah by sending broadcasts from a television station has been sentenced in New York City.

Saleh Elahwal was sentenced on Tuesday to a year and five months in prison. He had pleaded guilty to providing material support to Hizbollah.

The sentencing came two months after the main defendant in the case was sentenced to more than five years in prison.

Elahwal, who lives in Matawan, New Jersey, admitted accepting thousands of dollars to provide satellite transmission services to the station Al Manar between September 2005 and August 2006.

Hizbollah has fought Israel since the early 1980s. Israel and the US consider it a terrorist organisation. -- AP
