WASHINGTON - PRESIDENT Barack Obama has extended for another year a state of emergency regarding Myanmar that maintains sanctions against the military-run country.

President Obama's action comes as Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi faces charges of violating the terms of her detention by allegedly sheltering an American man. He reportedly swam across a lake last week to sneak into her residence.

President Obama said in a message sent to Congress on Friday that a 'crisis' between the United States and Myanmar 'has not been resolved.' He says Myanmar's 'hostile' policies 'pose a continuing unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.' Suu Kyi has already spent 13 of the last 19 years in detention without trial for her nonviolent promotion of democracy. -- AP
