Robbers steal US$1.7m in art
SAO PAULO - A GANG of 20 robbers disguised as police officers made off with US$1.7 million (S$2.48 million) worth of paintings from a multimillionaire's Sao Paulo home on the weekend, reports said Monday.

The gang rounded up the owner, Ilde Maksoud, 85, her daughter-in-law and four servants at gunpoint before stealing four works by Brazilian artists, according to the daily O Estado de Sao Paulo.

The paintings robbed were two by Candido Portinari (1903-1962), and one each by Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) and Orlando Teruz (1902-1984).

According to one of the employees, the gang gained access on Sunday by saying they were making a delivery of Mother's Day flowers. -- AFP
