MEXICO CITY - MEXICAN authorities on Tuesday raised the toll from a swine flu epidemic to 29 people dead and 913 infections.
The previous toll, given earlier on Tuesday by Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova, was 26 dead and 840 infected cases.
A later health ministry statement updated that to 'a total 942 confirmed cases,' including '29 people who have died.' It added that laboratory tests had yet to be carried out on another 39 people who had died over the past few weeks of respiratory problems and who were thus classed as suspected flu deaths.
'Most of the deaths from the H1N1 virus were recorded for people aged between 20 and 39 years of age, and the last confirmed case (death) dates from April 29,' Mr Cordova said in the statement.
Mexico's government is from Wednesday to gradually lift a shutdown on businesses, schools and other activities that cost the country an estimated US$2.3 billion (S$3.4 billion).
