The university announced the donation on Thursday.

It's not clear if the gift is connected to a string of at least a dozen others given anonymously to universities across the nation in recent weeks.

But there are some similarities.

The universities don't know who is donating the money and aren't supposed to try and find out.

And all of the universities are led by women.

The donor has requested that US$7 million of the Michigan State University gift be used toward financial aid and scholarships, including programs that enhance educational opportunities for female and minority students.
