NEW YORK (AP) - A WOMAN whose left leg was severed after she was hit by a New York City bus has been awarded US$27.5 million (S$41.2 million).
A jury awarded the money to 45-year-old janitorial worker Gloria Aguilar, who was struck while crossing a Manhattan street in November 2005.
Her lawyer Ben Rubinowitz says doctors amputated the leg above the knee.
He says New York City Transit agency lawyers argued his client was outside the crosswalk and had walked into the side of the bus.
He says the US$27.5 million award is the largest ever for a lost leg.
New York City Transit spokesman Charles Seaton says the agency will appeal the verdict. -- AP
