CAIRO - CHRISTIAN shops were stoned in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria on Sunday after a Muslim was stabbed and fatally wounded in a fight with Coptic neighbours, a security official said.
Ahmed Abdel Razzek Gomaa died of his wounds a day after having been stabbed on Saturday in the Karmuz district of the northern city, the source told AFP, without giving the cause of the fight.
Dozens of Muslims gathered after his funeral to hurl stones at shops owned by Coptic Christians and at police who tried to intervene. Ten people from both communities were rounded up and an investigation opened into Mr Gomaa's killing.
Last month, sectarian tensions flared in Damass village, north of Cairo, after a Copt died in clashes between Muslims and Christians.
Sectarian clashes and killings have broken out sporadically over the past decades in Egypt, where Copts account for an estimated six to 10 percent of an 80-million population. -- AFP
