SYRACUSE (New York) - FEDERAL prosecutors say an American psychiatrist wanted on a charge he set up bogus organ transplants in the Philippines is in custody in Guam.
A federal grand jury in Syracuse, New York, indicted Jerome Howard Feldman last month on a wire fraud charge.
Authorities say he carried out a scheme to defraud desperately ill victims on false promises that he could broker organ transplants for them in the Philippines.
Authorities say he may have bilked victims out of as much as US$400,000 (S$604,000).
Feldman appeared in federal court in Guam on Thursday on immigration charges. He was arrested Feb 2 in Manila.
Federal authorities say they will return Feldman to New York to face the wire fraud charge.
Prosecutors could not immediately say if Feldman has a lawyer. -- AP
