MONTAGUE (Texas) - A NOTORIOUS county jail where some cells didn't lock and inmates allegedly had sex with female guards has been reopened following US$1 million (S$1.5 million) worth of repairs and renovation.
Montague County started moving its 63 inmates back this week after inspectors from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards approved the corrective work.
Sheriff Paul Cunningham closed the jail for the renovations on Jan. 1, just after he was sworn in to office.
Authorities said inmates openly took drugs, used cell phones that were supplied by friends or guards, disabled some surveillance cameras and made weapons out of nails.
The previous sheriff and 16 other people have been indicted on a variety of charges including drug and sex violations. -- AP
