SAN JOSE (Costa Rica) - EMERGENCY officials say at least 14 people were killed by a strong earthquake that rocked Costa Rica.
Cristian Aase of the Red Cross said Friday that at least 10 others are missing after the magnitude-6.1 quake. He expects the death toll to continue to rise.
Among the dead are two young sisters killed by a landslide near the city of Alajuela, north of the capital. A woman in the capital, San Jose, died of a heart attack.
The quake shook Costa Rica on Thursday afternoon. It shattered windows, cracked walls and set off landslides that blocked roads.
The US Geological Survey says the temblor was centered 35 kilometres northwest of the capital of San Jose, near the Poas Volcano national park. -- AP
