HAUPPAUGE (New York) - A NEW York man is excited to receive his 'GETOSAMA' license plates in time for Christmas.
Retired New York Police Department officer Arno Herwerth said Tuesday that he ordered the vanity plates in 2007 as a reminder that Sept 11 mastermind Osama bin Laden remains at large.
The plates were delivered, but the state Department of Motor Vehicles quickly ordered them returned, saying the plates could be considered objectionable.
Mr Herwerth, who lives in Long Island, east of New York City, filed a federal complaint, and the DMV relented in February.
Mr Herwerth initially rejected the offer because the DMV wouldn't pay attorney's fees, but he eventually decided to settle the case.
He says the DMV is overnighting his registration so he can put the plates on for Christmas. -- AP
