MELBOURNE (Australia) - ONE person was killed after two small planes collided mid-air on Wednesday, causing one to crash into the garage of a house in Australia, police said.

The other plane, carrying two men, was able to land safely at nearby Moorabbin Airport south of Melbourne. Neither man was injured.

The pilot of the plane that crashed was killed, said Senior Constable Cassy Stone of the Victoria state police department. The man, whose name was not released, was the only person on board.

No one on the ground was injured.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority and police were investigating what caused the two Cessna 150 airplanes to collide.

Police cordoned off several streets around the crash site in a suburban neighborhood.

Resident Jim Hilcke said he was in his backyard when he saw a plane flying low. He said the right wing tip of one aircraft hit the tail of the plane that crashed.

'I saw them hit each other. It crashed down and went out of sight. I heard a bang and smoke went up,' Mr Hilcke said. -- AP
