Aid worker's body found

JALALABAD - POLICE on Wednesday found the bullet-riddled body of a Japanese aid worker kidnapped the day before in eastern Afghanistan, a district governor said.

'We found the abducted Japanese man minutes ago. He has been shot several times,' Kuz Kunar district governor Malim Mashouq said.

Kazuya Ito, 31, was kidnapped in the district on Tuesday as he headed to carry out his daily inspection of an irrigation project being built by his employer, the Peshawar-kai non-governmental group, officials said.

The Japanese government said it had not yet confirmed Ito's death.

'We are aware of press reports but are still checking,' a foreign ministry official in Tokyo said. -- AFP
