WASHINGTON - MICROSOFT warned owners of 30-gigabyte Zune music players on Wednesday that they may experience 'issues' with the model as Zune owners around the world reported that their devices were freezing up.

'Customers with 30gb Zune devices may experience issues when booting their Zune hardware,' Microsoft said in a statement posted on the Zune support site at zune.net/en-US/support/default.htm 'We're aware of the problem and are working to correct it,' Microsoft said.

'Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!' The Microsoft statement came after Zune forums and discussion boards lit up overnight with complaints from Zune owners around the world that their MP3 players had stopped working.

Many of the messages were signed 'Victim of the December 31st 2008 Zune 30 Meltdown!' and the mass stoppage gave rise to puns such as 'Zunesday' and to comparisons with the overly hyped millennium Y2K bug.

Zune owners on the forums said the problem was apparently only affecting the original 30gb model of the Zune, Microsoft's answer to Apple's wildly popular iPod. -- AFP
