SINGAPORE Asian Youth Games athletes collected five medals - two golds and three bronzes - on Thursday.

The two gold medals were won by athletes in the bowling and swimming competitions; while the bronze medals were netted by a hurdler, a bowler, and a shooter.

The bowling pair of New Hui Fen and Darshini Khrishna clinched the Republic's second gold medal in the girls' double event on Thursday at Orchid Country Club.

Together they bowled a total of 2,680 pinfalls, 101 pinfalls ahead of Thai duo of Sathean Tanaprang and Saebe Yanee. South Korea's Oh Nu Ri and Sim Ui Jin took the bronze, a further 75 pinfalls behind.

Swimmer Lynette Lim broke her own national 400m freestyle record with a time of 4min 14.25sec to win Singapore's first gold in the swimming competition at the Singapore Sports School.

She was more than seven seconds ahead of silver medalist Benjaporn Sriphanomthorn of Thailand (4:21.63) and third-place Stephanie Au of Hong Kong (4:21.93)

Lynette's previous national mark of 4:16.42 was set in June 2008 at the Janet Evans Invitational in California.

At the Bishan Stadium, hurdler Inez Leong took bronze in the 100-metre hurdles with a time of 15.22sec, behind Japanese Mayu Ueda (14.18s) and South Korean Suelgi Park (14.67s).

Rounding up the medal haul for Singapore was shooter Abel Lim, who clinched the bronze medal in the 10m air rifle with a score of 685.6, a mere 0.6 behind China pair of Wu Jianing and Gao Tingjie.

It required a shoot-off to decide the top prize, with Jianing edging out his compatriot Tingjie 10.5 to 10.3 in a tense final shoot-off at Safra Yishun.
