NATIONAL youth shooter Abel Lim has won Singapore's first Asian Youth Games shooting medal.

The 16-year-old fired a total of 685.5 to claim the bronze in the 10-metre air rifle on Thursday. He was a mere 0.6 points behind China duo Wu Jianing and Gao Tingjie who were tied on 686.2.

It required a shoot-off to decide the top prize, with Jianing edging out his compatriot Tingjie 10.5 to 10.3 in a tense final shoot-off at Safra Yishun.

'I'm delighted with the win. I didn't set any expectations for myself before the competition so this bronze medal is a nice bonus,' said a visibily delighted Abel who could not stop grinning after looking at the final results.

Added Singapore's chef de mission Lim Wung Yew, a former national shooter himself: 'He was mentally very strong and pulled himself together for that last shot. It was great.
