POLE vaulter Sean Lim and high jumper Melissa Wu got Singapore onto the Asian Youth Games scoreboard when they each bagged bronze medals on the opening day of the athletics competition on Tuesday.
At Bishan Stadium, Hwa Chong Institution student Sean, 16, vaulted 4.30 metres to finish third among six boys. The Singaporean took two attempts to clear that height, thus losing out to silver medallist Chi Chien Hao of Chinese Taipei, who needed just one attempt at 4.30m. Japan's Sho Hibasa claimed the gold with an impressive vault of 4.81m.
Cedar Girls School's Melissa, 16, jumped 4.94m to finish third behind Thailand's Pennapa Tantragool (5.58m) and Qatar's Reyma Alen Thomas (5.06).
In the 100m boys heats, Singapore sprinter Mohd Anuar Sharir won the third and final heat in 11.07s to be the second fastest qualifer for the eight-boy final on Friday.
Six gold medals in total were awarded at the athletics competition on Tuesday. The other winners were: Wu Meng-Chia (TPE) -- high jump girls (1.75m); Arjun Arjun (IND) -- discus boys (58.72); Li Zhixuan (CHN) -- 1,500m girls (4:34.44); Waleed Saleh Ali Layah (YEM) -- 1,500 boys (4:00.91).
