LONDON - PERHAPS Guillermo Garcia Lopez should have asked Roger Federer to play in his waistcoast and tightly-tailored military-look jacket on Wednesday.
Baby Federer soon?
FEDERER'S heavily pregnant wife Mirka was missing from her normal spot in the players' guest box on Wednesday, fuelling rumours that a new Federer was about to arrive.
'She's just not feeling 100 per cent,' he told reporters.
It may have done more to restrict the world number two's expansive strokes than the outclassed Spaniard.
Garcia-Lopez was little more than a human ball machine for the Swiss maestro who waltzed to a comfortable 6-2 6-2 6-4 second-round victory on a sun-drenched Centre Court.
The laid-back Federer simply oozed class. While Garcia-Lopez, one of six Spanish men in singles action on Wednesday, scurried around the baseline, the Swiss glided around his favourite lawn, effortlessly stroking winners.
The five times champion and favourite to reclaim the title snatched from his grasp last year by Rafael Nadal, would never disrespect a fellow professional but at times he appeared to be toying with the 42nd best player in the world.
Murray-Mania may be taking hold at this year's championships but Federer in this mood will take some beating.
After finally capturing the French Open this month, the one major to elude him, he said he could now play the rest of his career without pressure.
So far this week, with six near-flawless sets in the bag, he has been as good as his word. 'I think it was a good match for me today and I was able to try a few things in the third set,' was the closest Federer came to admitting the contest with Garcia-Lopez had been no more taxing than a shift on Wimbledon's Aorangi practice courts.
'I definitely didn't have to play my very best but it was solid and that's exactly what I needed today. I was quite surprised I was able to win so easily.
'There are many guys left who will have a crack at me with nothing to lose, and that's probably what's going to happen in the next round as well.' Newly-married Federer is having a harder time fending off inevitable questions about the arrival date of his first child. -- REUTERS
