CAPE TOWN - BRITISH and Irish Lions lock Nathan Hines has been banned from the playing in the second test against South Africa for a dangerous tackle on Wilhelm Steenkamp in Tuesday's 13-13 draw with the Emerging Springboks.

The first Lions player to be cited on the tour, into its eighth game of 10, the Scotland second row was suspended for a week which means he will not play in the second test at Pretoria on Saturday but will be available for the third at Johannesburg July 4. He has 24 hours to appeal.

Hines was not selected for last Saturday's first test in Durban, where South Africa won 26-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, but was hoping for a spot at Pretoria, at least on the bench.

Born in Australia but capped 58 times by Scotland, Hines was cited for lifting the home side's lock and dropping the South African to the ground.

Steenkamp was not injured and referee Alain Roland did not show a yellow card, but Hines was called to appear before Canadian judicial officer Alan Hudson at the Western Province Rugby Union offices in Cape Town.

The Lions are due to name their lineup for the second test on Thursday and defense coach Shaun Edwards said that Hines' disciplinary hearing did not have a serious effect the selection process.

He said it showed that the players who faced the Emerging Springboks appeared more motivated than ever to get a place in the test side.

'It is more a positive that, if any of those guys are called into the test team, they have had a really tough hit out yesterday,' Edwards said.

'It was a tough game and, if any of them are included in the team, they would be ready to go in a test match because there is no better way to prepare for a tough game by playing a tough game.' -- AP
