SWIMMER Quah Ting Wen became the first to earn a spot in the South-east Asia (SEA) Games team when she met the qualifying requirements at the 5th Singapore National Swimming Championships today at the Singapore Sports School.
The 16-year-old did so in style, smashing three of her own records - the national open, national under-17 and meet record - with a time of 55.65 seconds in the 100 metres freestyle event.
Her previous national and age-group record, set in March, was 55.80s. The meet record of 56.86s was set in last year's edition.
Parker Lam, 20, also re-wrote his own national record and the meet record in the 50m breaststroke in 29.31s. His previous national mark, set in March, was 29.59s. The event, however, is not contested at the SEA Games.
Pang Sheng Jun, 16, clocked 4:34.68 in the 400m individual medley for a new national U-17 and meet record.
Others that made the cut for the SEA Games include Amanda Lim, 16, Mylene Ong, 17, Tao Li, 19, Shana Lim, 16, Rainer Ng, 17 and Marcus Cheah, 21.
About 20 swimmers are expected to feature at the December 9-18 Games in Laos.
The 5th Singapore National Swimming Championships continues today and will end on Sunday.
