SAO PAULO (Brazil) - RONALDO says he's playing well for Corinthians - he's the top goalscorer - but he's not quite ready to return to playing for Brazil.
That goes against the wishes of many Brazilian reporters and fans who are asking national coach Dunga to call him up for upcoming World Cup qualifiers and the Confederations Cup this summer in South Africa.
'Right now I'm not in good enough physical condition to return to the national team,' Ronaldo said on Friday on a Brazilian Web site. 'I'm still looking to be in better shape.'
Ronaldo, 32, is the leading goalscorer in World Cup finals history and has played in the last four. But he has not played with the national team since it was knocked out of the 2006 World Cup by France 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
He suffered the third major knee injury of his career in February 2008 at AC Milan and, following surgery, returned to action for Corinthians in March and has knocked in 10 goals.
'I'm getting better every day, in every practice,' he said.
'I'm pacing myself, training more. Playing just one time a week is also better for me physically.' Ronaldo has made it clear he wants to play in his fifth World Cup. In 2006 he became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup finals with 15. -- AP
