A HALF-HOUR weekly television programme featuring the best of youth sports will be shown during prime on Mediacorp Channel 5 starting on March 4.

The 13-episode The School Nationals programme will be aired every Wednesday from 7.30 pm to 8 pm and will showcase the best of the National School Sports Championships 2009.

The series will cover almost all the 26 sports played in school, ranging from football and wushu to waterpolo and sailing - from the quarter-finals stage to the end.

All three divisions 'A', 'B', and 'C', that is, the lower and upper secondary as well as the junior college levels, will be featured.

The Ministry of Education (MOE), the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), and Mediacorp signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Wednesday to facilitate this series.

The three organisations were represented by Mr Oon Jin Teik, chief executive officer of the SSC, Ms Sum Chee Wah, Director (Education Programmes) from MOE, and Mr Kenneth Liang, executive vice-president, TV programming and production, Channel 5, Mediacorp TV Singapore.

The aim of the series is to build a strong sporting culture through wider exposure of youth sports and to give budding athletes support and encouragement, said the three organisations a joint statement.
