SOME of Singapore's best road cyclists will be handpicked to form an elite national team over the next few months, in a bid to revive the sport and boost the pool of talented cyclists here.

OCBC Bank announced on Wednesday that it would sponsor the training and development of the OCBC Singapore Cycling Team, which is being prepped to challenge for a medal at next year's South-east Asia Games in Laos.

The Singapore Amateur Cycling Association is looking for a team of about eight cyclists, who will receive sponsored equipment, apparel, and specialised training.

They will also get travel regularly to take part in overseas races, in order to gain more competitive experience.

OCBC will fund the team for one year. The bank did not reveal the amount it would spend on the team, saying that the cost has been included in the estimated $1.5 million it is spending to stage the inaugural OCBC Cycle Singapore in February next year.
