BEIJING - LU YONG won the men's 85kg weightlifting title at the Beijing Olympics on Friday to give China their eighth weightlifting gold medal.
Lu lifted 180kg in the snatch and 214kg in the clean and jerk for a total heave of 394kg, equalling the total of silver medallist Andrei Rybakou who had broken the world record with a total lift of 394kg moments earlier.
The 22 year-old Chinese won the title because he had a lower body weight than the 26 year-old world champion.
However, Lu had to hoist 214kg twice in the clean and jerk after the judges reversed their initial ruling and declared the first attempt a failure.
The lifter pointed to the crowd as he celebrated his victory.
Tigran Varban Martirosyan of Armenia won the bronze medal with a total lift of 380kg.
Earlier, China's Cao Lei won the women's 75kg title , giving China their 7th weightlifting gold medal. -- AFP
