Fined for false export declaration
By Khushwant Singh

LOGISTICS firm Goodwind Transport was fined $4,000 for its role in falsely declaring that a shipment of women's garments was from Indonesia when the true country of origin was China.

A district court heard on Tuesday that in March 2007, EES Freight Services obtained an export permit on behalf of Indonesian company PT Exim Texindo to ship about 54,600 pieces of women's garments to New York.

The clothes worth US$99,590 ($S138,500) were originally from China and Singapore Customs investigations revealed that Goodwind had falsely informed EES that the garments were from Indonesia.

Goodwind's manager Fong Lai Choo pleaded guilty and paid the fine.

Businessman Shih Cheng Te, 64, who is alleged to have hired the logistics firm to do the repacking, is claiming trial.
