SOME patients at the Jurong Polyclinic with long-term ailments like diabetes and high blood pressure now go to nurse Carolyn Chan instead of a doctor.

The 37-year-old is one of just five advanced practice nurses (APNs) in polyclinics qualified to take over some duties traditionally carried out by doctors.

Specialising in chronic diseases, Ms Chan sees more than 20 patients a day. Most are follow-up cases assigned to her by doctors who have assessed the patients and obtained their consent that they be seen by her on subsequent visits.
