JAKARTA - LATE last night, news came that one of the dead in Friday's bombings might be a Singaporean man. The Indonesian Health Ministry's crisis centre chief, Mr Rustam Pakaya, told The Straits Times that one of the victims was Singaporean. But late last night he said he could not confirm it.
The dead man was identified on an Indonesian news website only as Arnold.
Referring to media reports that a Singaporean had died, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that neither the ministry nor Singapore's embassy in Jakarta had received any official notification as of 10pm on Friday.
'We are trying to verify this information,' it said.
Among the dead identified was New Zealander Timothy David Mackay, 62, president of the Indonesian unit of Holcim, the world's second-largest cement products manufacturer. He was at a breakfast meeting at the JW Marriott hotel when the bomb exploded.
Three Australians were also identified among the dead, according to Indonesian and Australian news sites: Australian trade official Craig Senger, 36, and businessmen Nathan Verity, 38, and Garth McEvoy, 40.
An Indonesian known only as Darmanto was also said to have died.
Police said the injured included citizens of Indonesia, the United States, Australia, South Korea, the Netherlands, Italy, Britain, Canada, Norway, Japan and India.
If Arnold's death is confirmed, he would be only the second Singaporean to die in a terrorism incident overseas.
Last November, lawyer Lo Hwei Yen, 28, was killed in the Mumbai terror attacks that left about 170 dead.
