THE drive to help households save energy has been expanded and will go deep into the heartlands, Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan said on Thursday.

The Energy Save programme, initially launched in December to great success, has now been scaled up across all HDB estates over a five year period.

'There are many good reasons for doing so,' said Mr Mah. 'Being more efficient with energy keeps Singapore competitive and less dependent on the import of fuel for power generation. At a personal level, residents can reduce their energy bills and save money.'

He was speaking at the launch of the Energy Save Roadshow @ Tampines, which kicks off a grassroots campaign to raise the awareness about energy issues in the suburbs.

On average, there will be six major road shows and 25 outreach exhibitions a year over the next five years.

At the roadshow, residents can view a mock-up flat called 'My Energy Save Home' which shows how home owners can save energy around their flats.

The programme, a joint effort between the Housing Development Board (HDB), the National Environment Agency and the Energy Market Authority, aims to reduce energy consumption by 30 per cent or more in common areas in HDB estates.

It has another objective to help each household reduce its energy usage by 10 per cent.

Estimated annual cost savings amount to $30 million for town councils and $90 million for HDB households islandwide, said Mr Mah.

Pilot tests conducted at HDB estates such as Serangoon North and Wellington Circle, were conducted last year and showed that energy savings of 30 per cent in common areas can be achieved.

Residents can also bring their conventional light bulbs, even used ones, and exchange them for brand new energy-saving light bulbs.

Under the programme, home owners can trade in old air-conditioners or refrigerators for new energy-saving ones at special prices.

Mr Mah told residents: 'Saving energy begins with each and every one of us. Together, we can not only reap the benefits of reduced energy cost, but also ensure that Singapore will be continue to be clean, green, and sustainable.'
