AN AUXILIARY police officer who stole $2 million from his employer was jailed for seven years on Thursday.
Stanley Ong Beng Hock, 28, then a Certis Cisco police constable, had admitted to the theft at the Jalan Afifi premises in Paya Lebar on April 12.
He also pleaded guilty to two other charges of removing $1.2 million of the benefits of his criminal conduct out of Singapore, and moving the sum without giving a report as the amount exceeded $30,000.
Ong, a Malaysian, was arrested two days later in a rental flat in Kuala Lumpur. A total of $1.4 million, including about $795,000 from another accused, has been recovered.
The case against Ong's colleague, Tan Chee Wey, 41, is ongoing.
A district court heard that Ong was deployed as a 'banker'' at the cash processing centre on the fourth storey of Certis Cisco Centre 1. He was responsible for delivering nine consignments of cash from the fourth level to the vault on level one.
It was during the packing and stacking of boxes and envelopes of cash into four trolleys that Ong filched an envelope containing $2 million. Ong fled to Malaysia the same day after the theft.
The prosecution had pressed for a stiff sentence.
District Judge Liew Thiam Leng said Ong had abused his position of trust by stealing a very substantial sum of money. This, he added, had an impact on the security of the company concerned.
Ong could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined for theft as a servant. He could have been fined up to $500,000 and/or jailed for up to seven years for removing the property, and for the last offence, fined up to $50,000 and/or jailed for up to three years.
