TEN breast cancer survivors did their part for charity on Thursday, clocking a combined total of 30 km on treadmill to raise $5,000.

The women were taking part in a Raffles Place roadshow launch for the Great Eastern Women 10K, an all-female race currently into its fourth year. The $5,000 donation was provided by the event's title sponsor, Great Eastern.

The race will be held on Nov 1 at the Padang as part of the Marina Bay urban Challenge. Organisers hope to attract 15,000 participants, up from 10,000 last year.

The 10 cancer survivors are members of a dragon-boating team called Paddlers in the Pink, which comes under the the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF). The BCF is this year's adopted charity for the Great Eastern Women 10K.

Among the breast cancer survivors who took part in the treadmill challenge was Ms Lim Lay Pheng, 41, a first-time participant in the Great Eastern Women 10K.

'We're here to walk the talk, and show cancer survivors that its possible to lead a normal life and be active,' said the mother of one, who works in the financial sector.

Participants can show their support for BCF by donating their registration fee discounts to charity. Past runners enjoy a 10 per cent discount while first-time runners get a 5 per cent discount, which they can choose to donate to BCF.

Registration for the Great Eastern Women 10K 2009 begins on Friday and ends on Sept 6 - or when the number hits 15,000.
