A RARE gold coin dating back to the 13th century is on show at Singapore's newest museum.

The Singapore Coins and Notes Museum, located on levels three and four of a restored Chinatown shophouse, opens its doors to visitors on Tuesday.

Opened by Singapore Mint, it is the first and only museum dedicated to displaying currency here, and visitors can look at coins and notes produced in the Raffles era and also track how currency evolved from then to now.
