THE ones in the distinctive red berets have done it again - snagged the top honours at the Singapore Armed Forces' 'Best Combat Unit' competition for the sixth consecutive year.
The elite Commandos outperformed other army units to win this year's trophy. It is a record 23rd win in the 40 years the competition has been run.
The last non-Commando unit to win the honour was the 1st Guards battalion in 2003.
The commanding officer of the 1st Commando Battalion, Lieutenant-Colonel Edwin Goh, said the men felt the pressure to defend the coveted title, but his first priority was always to ensure they put in their best and trained safely.
The 35-year old said: 'So long as we are doing our best and doing things right, we will win.'
The annual Best Unit Competition grades SAF units on such criteria as battle readiness, physical fitness, marksmanship, manpower issues, logistics readiness and safety.
But the format has evolved to include an element of realism: This time around, for instance, a live-firing shoot was included as a test of how nimble the men were when shooting with real bullets.
