Maid's fall: misadventure
By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent

A YOUNG Indonesian maid fell accidentally from a 10th-floor kitchen window while doing the laundry, a coroner's court heard.

Ms Maria Ulra, 23, was barely a month into her job when she died of multiple injuries on Feb 9 after falling from the Tampines home of her employer's parents-in-law.

At an inquiry into her death on Monday, the court heard that Ms Ulra, who started work for her employer at Mariam Walk on Jan 13, would spend weekdays at the Tampines flat to look after her employer's 63-year-old father-in-law and do household chores.

The incident happened shortly after her employer's mother-in-law had left the flat to pick up her three grandchildren from school.

The maid was found lying face up on the ground floor behind the block at 1.13pm. She died later in Changi General Hospital.

The court heard that she could have fallen out of the open window grille while standing on a 16cm-high blue stool to hang the laundry on a bamboo pole.

State Coroner Victor Yeorecorded a verdict of misadventure on her death.
