1 more malaria case
By Diana Othman

ANOTHER case of vivax malaria has been confirmed and added to the malaria cluster at Sungei Kadut and Mandai Estate, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Tuesday.

This brings the total number of cases in the cluster to 14, of which 12 are foreigners while two are Singaporeans, a full-time national serviceman and a general worker.

The latest case is a 24-year-old foreign construction worker who was staying in Sungei Kadut Street 2. He was not fixed to a particular worksite and had not travelled out of Singapore.

He started feeling ill on June 11.

NEA said that it is continuing with intensive vector control operations in the Sungei Kadut/Mandai Estate vicinity.

The dormitory operators also continue to spray potential mosquito breeding habitats as well as conduct chemical fogging and residual spraying.

Workers housed in the dormitories are also provided with mosquito netting and mosquito repellant.

NEA added that it is continuing to monitor the mosquito population in the said areas.

The number of adult mosquitoes trapped has continued to decline, from 137 caught within the first week of operations to 18 recently, indicating the effectiveness of ground operations.

The Health Ministry is also monitoring the situation closely and will update the public on any new developments.

MOH said the best way to stop malaria is to take precautionary measures against mosquitoes and prevent their breeding.

Persons diagnosed with malaria should also be isolated from further mosquito bites so as to reduce the risk of further transmission of the disease.
