FORTY-FIVE elderly people will be graduating from an IT programme organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC) this Friday.
One of them is a 77-year-old Tan Tiong Cheng who learnt to keep in touch with his son and grandchildren through the internet.
They had participated in Elderly @ IT! Boot Camp, which is the CDC's initiative to help the elderly pick up IT skills to network and keep in touch with peers, stimulate mental wellness, encourage active ageing and promote inter-generational bonding.
The boot camp is mainly conducted by volunteers, some of whom are students from ITE College West and even alumni members of the programme.
Arrangements have been made with ITE College West, where a designated lab at the Bukit Batok campus will be set aside once a week for four months to facilitate practice sessions for such alumni members.
The practice sessions are part of the new 'Holistic Package for Alumni Members' where annual gatherings of boot camp graduands will be organised together with senior-focused talks and interactive skits.
Participants will also be able to connect with each other via the CDC's newly launched elderly portal I Not Old.com @ South West, where they can be updated on elderly-related news, join in island-wide activities suitable for elderly, watch videos and challenge themselves through online games.
Elderly @ IT! has reached out to a total of 232 senior citizens since its launch in November 2007.
