COMING soon to your smartphone is a host of applications that will offer convenient access to government services and information.
See how crowded a polyclinic waiting room is via direct video link, book sports facilities or an appointment with the taxman, pay fines, check weather forecasts and even dengue hot spots with your phone - these are some of the e-services to be offered in a tie-up between the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), and a Singapore company, MobileWerkz.
Smartphones are Web-enabled 3G or 3.5G phones with multimedia capabilities such as video viewing or social network access.
The smartphone application called Mobie will offer some 30 services from 15 government agencies, including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Manpower, Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.
A trial involving 1,000 users will take place in August, with a launch expected in October.
A prototype of the application was unveiled at trade fair CommunicAsia 2009 on Tuesday.
Some of the demonstrations included how polyclinic users can see how many people are in a queue via video link. Appointments at government agencies, or sports facilities can be booked, rescheduled or cancelled through the application.
Eventually, payments can also be made for, for example, fines and purchases for data from agencies, such as property information.
Users would also be able to check weather forecasts, traffic conditions and even dengue hot spots.
The rapid uptake of Web-enabled smartphones and data plan subscriptions among Singaporeans has made such an application feasible, said an IDA spokesman at the fair. He also noted Singapore's high mobile phone penetration rate of 130 per cent.
