A FORMER security guard was on Monday jailed for 4 1/2 years for slashing his sister-in-law with a chopper in February.
The head and neck injuries she suffered kept her in hospital for more than a month.
Nathan Sinakarappan, 62, was convinced that Ms Singaravallye Karppiah was encouraging his wife to prostitute herself and was procuring clients for her.
At 4.30pm on Feb 25, he ambushed the 59-year-old as she was returning to her flat in Bukit Batok Central.
He had with him a chopper and a change of clothes. He also had a tape recorder, with which he was going to record her confession and play it when he confronted his wife later.
Despite his sister-in-law's denials, Nathan kept up his interrogation until he lost his patience and slashed her repeatedly with the chopper.
Her cries of pain and pleas for mercy were captured on the recording. He then fled.
He got rid of the chopper and ditched his blood-soaked clothes for the fresh set he had with him.
Court documents said he admitted to the police that he intended to kill his sister-in-law if she did not 'cooperate' with him.
Nathan pleaded guilty to causing her grievous hurt and could have been jailed for life. He was spared from caning because he is above 50 years old.
