ALL the tunnels along the Central Expressway (CTE) will be closed for six hours this Sunday (June 14) for the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Land Transport Authority (LTA) to conduct exercises.

The closure will start from midnight till 6am.

This joint exercise is a routine training session conducted every two years.

Th last such exercise was held in 2007 where all the CTE tunnels were also closed for several hours to accomodate the exercise.

The SCDF said that the exercise was part of ongoing efforts with the LTA to sharpen and enhance their operational readiness in emergencies. The exercise scenario this year will be of a major traffic accident involving several vehicles in the tunnel.

Through this exercise, officers will be able to refresh their skills in mitigating such situations and carrying out rescue operations should such incidents happen in future, said an SCDF spokesman.

Motorists who use the CTE to get to the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) or the Seletar Expressway (SLE) should take alternate routes (see box).

The public is advised to plan their journeys carefully to minimise any inconvenience. They should also follow the directions of displayed signs and the officers on duty.
