A POPULAR bakery that had to be shut for almost a week after factory staff discovered chlorine contamination in some food ingredients will resume business on Saturday.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) gave the all-clear for The Royals (Premium Cakes) Pte Ltd to resume factory operations on Friday.

'Apart from detection of chlorine in the contamined products, no other hazardous chemicals were detected by laboratory tests,' said the AVA.

Last Sunday, employees at the the bakery's factory in Bedok North smelt something was off when they detected a bleach-like odour in tubs of chicken-mushroom pie filling, and also in tubs of sugar syrup.

Their early discovery prevented the chlorine-laced ingredients from being used in food production. As a preventative measure, the bakery withdrew all its products and cleared out pastries worth an estimated $30,000.

The factory has also been thoroughly cleaned up during its closure.

The company claims the contamination was an act of sabotage as only ingredients for their best-selling chicken-mushroom pies and cakes were affected.

Company director Joy Tang, 49, said the bakery's outlets will reopen on Saturday. The five-day closure has cost the company about $40,000.

'Since our closure, customers have continue to ask when we'll be back in business, and we're very grateful for their support,' said Ms Tang.

She declined to comment on the progress of police investigations into the company's claims of sabotage.
