OFF-DUTY police sergeant Hairul Anuar Mohd Noor spotted a middle-aged man who had fallen into the Singapore River last July and unhesitatingly jumped in to save him.
With the unconscious man in one arm, the 23-year-old cop swum to the river bank and held onto a gap in the wall for more than 15 minutes before rescuers arrived.
For his bravery, Sgt Hairul Anuar received a commendation certificate from Police Commissioner Khoo Boon Hui at the annual Police Day Observance Ceremony on Wednesday
He was among 276 police officers and 150 teams awarded certificates to recognise those who have shown consistent good work, bravery and outstanding leadership last year.
Sgt Hairul Anuar said that he was hanging out at the Merlion Park along Fullerton Road when he saw the man - who looked to be in his 50s - sitting on the metal railing, facing the river.
The 23-year-old did not think too much of it and was shocked when he next heard the splashing of water.
Looking into the river, he saw the man floating face down in the water.
Sgt Hairul Anuar said he took off his shoes, handphone and wallet before jumping in.
'I never thought about getting an award because I thought it was my duty to save him,' he added.
