Family bonding through food
By Melissa Sim
STUDENTS in the afternoon session at Mee Toh School in Punggol spent time flying kites with their parents yesterday before being let home early so they could have dinner with their families.

Also rushing back home was Jetstar Asia's head of operations Chan Choy Kee, 53, who left the office at 4.30pm to prepare a teppanyaki meal for his family, with skewers of chicken wings and asparagus wrapped in bacon.

His children, aged 17, 21 and 24, were home for dinner.

It was the same story across the island as people marked the seventh Eat With Your Family Day, organised by the Centre For Fathering.

About 132,350 participants from 180 companies and schools had pledged their support. At Downtown East, 35 needy families were invited by the North East Community Development Council to a buffet spread.

Grassroots leaders also encouraged their residents and friends to observe the day, some through Family Life Champions (FLC) appointed to promote familial ties.

Retiree Fu Chuan San, 67, an FLC for the Geylang Serai Division, said the 18 participants in her men's interest group were taught to make local dishes and encouraged to cook for their families last night.
