Operating at a loss, for now

TRAIN operator SMRT Corp is likely to incur losses on the new Circle Line in the first couple of years despite being allowed to charge higher fares.

SMRT, which starts operating Stage 3 of the five-stage 33.3km line on Thursday, is expected to start making profit from the line only when it fully opens after 2011.

'We will try not to lose as much money when Stage 1 and 2 opens,' SMRT chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa said.
